What Does The Worlds Longest Place Name Mean?
Sign for the New Zealand Hill with the world's longest place name.
The name is written in the native Māori language of New Zealand.
When translated into English it reads,
"the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as 'landeater’, played his flute to his loved one."
New Zealanders simply call it Taumata Hill.
The original story goes...
Tamatea was a famous and well-known chief and warrior.
He was traveling through the back of Porangahau with his brother when they would encounter another hostile tribe.
A fight broke out between them and the other tribe and during the skirmish, his brother was killed.
Tamatea was deeply saddened by the loss of his brother.
It was said for some days he stayed at the battle site grieving over his loss.
And each morning he would sit on the hill and play a tune for his brother on a koauau or Māori flute.
