What is the Milford Sounds?
'The Milford Sounds' is a fiord based in the southwest of New Zealand's South Island.
It's technically not a sound but a fiord.
Such a beautiful location in the south island of New Zealand. It has been called many times as the 'Eighth Wonder of the World', keep reading and you will start to see why this place is highly valued.
What is a fiord?
A fiord is a narrow stretch of sea (a long inlet) surrounded on either side by high cliffs. Like a "Valley of Sea".
The 'Milford Sounds' fiord features scenery for an impressive 15.1km.
See photo below.
Where did the Milford Sounds name come from?
The name Milford Sounds comes from the first European settler to visit. 'John Grono' in 1823.
The famous Captain James Cook had sailed past the entrance to Milford Sound, not once but twice.
John being the first European to find the Milford Sounds was so impressed by the nature and beauty of the place he named it after his hometown Milford Haven located on the Welsh coast in Wales.
However, keep in mind the Maori have known this place far longer than the Europeans and have named it 'Piopiotahi". After the extinct 'piopio bird' which frequently travelled here from Southland and Otago.

"Don't bother with any of the other Milford Sound Cruise companies, just book Cruise Milford already!!
We arrived 2 hours early for our cruise after a last minute decission to do Sunrise at Mirror Lakes. Rod at the check in counter was lovely and let us go on the earlier cruise instead of waiting 2 hours for our booked time. So flexible and accommodating which was great, he was super helpful and friendly too.
The cruise itself was fantastic. It felt like we had a private charter. I am sooooo happy we didn't go on one of the bigger boats full of tour groups. The weather wasn't fantastic but our crew were fantastic and super friendly. The information given was the perfect amount and the dad jokes by the skipper were appreciated. The couches on the upper deck are a nice touch as was the complimentary tea, coffee & biscuits.
Would highly recommend."
