THE CHEEKY KEA PARROT

The endangered kea is the world's only alpine parrot, and one of the most intelligent birds. They are full of character and often found trying to steal the rubber from the cars of tourists. The kea was crowned Bird of the Year in 2017.

 

TUI A FORREST MUSICIAN

Tui are boisterous, medium-sized, common and a widespread bird of the forests and suburbia. They look black from a distance, but in good light, tui has a blue, green and bronze iridescent sheen, and distinctive white throat tufts (poi). They're very vocal, having 2 voice boxes they produce a complicated mix of tuneful notes interspersed with coughs, grunts, and wheezes.

 

WONDEROUS WOOD PIGEON

A large and distinctively-colored pigeon. They have a widespread distribution through the country, being present in native forest, rural and urban habitats, including most cities. Also allowing close approach. The distinctive sound of its wing beats in flight also draws attention.

 

THE DANCING FANTAIL

The fantail is one of New Zealand’s best-known birds, with its distinctive fanned tail and loud song, and particularly because it often approaches within a meter or two of people

 

PEACEFUL NEW ZEALAND ROBIN

The New Zealand robin or toutouwai is a sparrow-sized bird found only in New Zealand. They are friendly and trusting, often coming to within a couple of meters of people.
